The new Ultimate Chocolate Oreos are basically the chocolate equivalent of the standard Mega Stuf Oreos, but actually have a little more thought put into them than Oreo’s usual strategy of “Just cram more creme in there and watch people lose their minds.”

Instead of one super-layer of creme, the Ultimate Chocolate Oreos feature three layers of “chocolate, white chocolate and dark chocolate flavored crème filling.” Are those layers all similar shades of brown and end up mushing together when you eat it? Yes. Is this fact listed nowhere on the box, leaving you to have to look it up on the Oreo website? Also yes. But the mix of chocolate is effective, creating a more balanced super-cookie that isn’t just a sugar bomb.

Sure, it’s a mudslide of chocolate creme that starts squirting out the sides as you take a bite. But it is a pretty fun ride.

Ultimate Chocolate Oreos

There’s a strange phenomenon with chocolate desserts where, at a certain point, they stop being advertised as delicious and just start subtly threatening you with how much chocolate it has.

A nice slice of shortcake with strawberries will be advertised with a regal air, like you’re going out for a nice tea time. A multi-layer cake with all chocolate elements? The waiter’s going to come out like a car salesman slapping the hood of a car and talking about how you’ll never believe how much chocolate they crammed into this thing.

Mind you, none of that is really an indicator of whether it will taste good. You can just buy chocolate at the store. The real question is whether all of that chocolate is utilized to make something really good.

So what do they taste like?

There really is a lot of chocolate creme at work here. The triple-layer creme runs into the same issue as the normal Mega Stuff where it has the structural integrity of a casino built in a swamp – fun, but ultimately doomed to sink into a sweet quagmire.

The moment you bite down, the sugary creme cake squishes out the sides, creating this chocolate-laden amalgamation of crunchy and creamy elements in your mouth. At a certain point, it goes from being a cookie to a big glob of creme with some crunchy bits. That’s not a bad thing – just different.

What’s cool here is the use of different cremes. Adding a layer of dark chocolate it all from being a tidal wave of sugar (like the Mega Stuf can be). Instead, it’s more balanced, allowing the more bitter chocolatey notes to stand out.

Eating a normal Mega Stuff makes you feel like you’re eating a depraved lab experiment gone wrong. The Ultimate Chocolate Oreo tastes like you’re eating an actual chocolate dessert. It’s like when a chocolate cake has too much frosting. For some people, it’s overwhelming. For others, it’s everything they need.
