Record-wise there hasn’t been a Syracuse team this bad in Jim Boeheim’s 45-year tenure as head coach but that didn’t keep the Orange from going toe-for-toe with top-seeded and heavily favored Duke in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.

Playing without their leading scorer Buddy Boeheim, who was suspended for one game after throwing a punch in Syracuse’s win over Florida State, the Orange were in control for much of Thursday’s contest despite being a double-digit underdog.

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski mentioned that himself, an assistant coach, and multiple players were dealing with likely food poisoning heading into Thursday’s contest. He also took time to discuss facing off against one of his best friends in the business in Jim Boeheim.

“We’re the best friends,” Krzyzewski said. “I don’t know if there’s anybody in coaching that could be better friends with another coach in this profession than me and Jim. … So, it’s tough playing against him and we were fortunate to win today. But his team played, his team did him proud. “

Duke will advance to the semi-finals where they’ll meet No. 4 Miami on Friday evening. Syracuse finishes under .500 as Jim Boeheim said afterwards that he won’t be retiring this off-season.
