On this week’s episode of the Food Podcast presented by Clearview Federal Credit Union on the TribLIVE podcast network, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank honors those who have consistently overcome challenges to make sure kids have food to eat.

Nearly 100,000 children in the Greater Pittsburgh area go to bed worried about their next meal, but Child Hunger Heroes work every day to help close that gap.

“All of the different meals are important to make sure kids have enough to eat so they can focus on learning during the school year and just being able to live up to their fullest potential. It’s harder to focus when you’re hungry, so we want these kids to have the best start they can as they enter into adulthood, ”said Food Bank Child Nutrition Outreach Coordinator Chelsey Novak.

This March, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is proud to recognize schools and community sponsors who have gone above and beyond to serve meals to kids through the Child Hunger Hero Award Program (CHH).

This year’s CHH award winners were evaluated on their involvement in programs including school meals, summer food, after-school meals, weekend backpacks and school pantry programs. Many have overcome severe challenges throughout the pandemic, including staff shortages, food supply issues and feeding kids during remote learning. This dedication to making sure kids get food is critical to the health and wellness of our community where one in five children live with hunger.

“We are so excited to be celebrating our Child Hunger Heroes who have thought creatively and worked tirelessly to ensure that children in our community have enough healthy food to eat. They have showed up and not given up despite many challenges, and they have used their super powers to strengthen our schools and communities, ”said Food Bank Director of Child Nutrition Programs Karen Dreyer.

The Food Bank is announcing gold, silver and bronze CHH award winners throughout the month of March. This year’s gold winners of the CHH awards are:

• Pittsburgh Public Schools

• Greater Johnstown School District

• Cambria County Child Development Corporation

• East End United Community Center

• Trinity Area School District

• Beaver County YMCA

• YMCA of Indiana County.

Next week the Food Bank will announce the silver winners of this year’s CHH awards.
