FORT MADISON – Non-profit group 2×4’s For Hope is getting ready to build the first-ever tiny home in Fort Madison.

A lot has been picked out at 2833 Ave. J, and will be able to accommodate two of the homes, said Stephanie Warner, Lee County representative for the Quincy, Illinois-based organization.

2×4’s For Hope builds 576-square-feet homes for homeless and at-risk veterans constructed by community volunteers.

“This seems to be a good location for them as it is only a few blocks from Hy-Vee and Walgreens,” said Doug Krogmeier, Fort Madison’s Planning and Zoning director.

Fort Madison modifies code to create ‘window of special approval’

Fort Madison City Council and Mayor Matt Mohrfeld are “100% on board,” said Warner, and when city building codes prohibiting too-small homes posed a barrier, Krogmeier had a solution.
